Stay in Watamu: Kobe Suite Resort

If you fly to Malindi Airport, then you are about 30 minutes drive to Watamu. I however prefer slow travel and always avoid Air travel whenever possible so I took a train from Nairobi to Mombasa then a taxi to the hotel.

Kobe Suite Resort is located on Garoda Beach where you’ll find hotels such as Kobe dedicated to Sustainable tourism. This place is also an ideal destination for Kite Surfers and other water sports.

It’s been a while since I accepted an invitation from hotels because of my switch to Responsible Tourism and Conscious Fashion. Kobe is one of the hotels in Kenya that I started following closely after making my switch because I saw how they preserve the nature around this beautiful hotel. When they contacted me for partnership, it was a little of a no brainer. It had 3 major things that a responsible traveller is currently looking for. Commitment to limiting environmental impact, Plastic-free: toiletries in bulk dispensers not single-use plastic, and Zero-miles: seasonal, local, organic and/or sustainably sourced food.

The management of Kobe has implemented all protocols in order to comply with new rules and regulations against the fight to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The hotel employees had their masks on all the time, and wash stations with hand sanitisers were easily accessible.

Upon arrival you meet friendly askaris(guards) at the entrance who will offer you hand sanitiser, check your temperature, politely ask you to wash your hands for your own safety, and help you with your bags. Due to changing shifts, you will also get to meet the other guards. At the reception, we were met with beautiful interior decor and warm smiles. The team was super responsive, but most importantly, warm, friendly and they offered so many brilliant suggestions for things to do in the area. Below is a short video of our stay at Kobe.

Our suite during our stay was The standard garden view which came equipped with a private balcony, living room, bedroom and a stunning shower with toiletries in bulk dispensers and not single-use plastic (this is the first thing I check because I still don’t understand why some hotels use single-use toiletries).

Their all-white decor, linen, and furniture felt clean, warm, and very comfortable. It blended well with the intense colours of the lush greenery and stunning blue ocean.

Breakfast was my favorite during our stay. It’s a combination of buffet spread and hot items. The best thing about the breakfast menu is that it offered fresh fruits and vegetables, all kinds of tea and fresh coffee.

THINGS TO LOVE: The hotel is located super close to the beach (you couldn’t ask for a better location). We had two swimming pools, a beach bar/restaurant and a few minutes walk to the kite surfing school. But more than that, all their rooms come with spacious balconies. Some with garden view and some with sea view. We only closed our balcony doors late in the night because the breeze from the trees and the sound of the ocean gave our trip an additional level of positive energy that I will remember forever.

  1. That looks amazing. It’s been 20 years since I have been to Mombasa and I don’t remember where we stayed. However, it was not this gorgeous. I have to remember this resort because we plan to take our kids to Kenya so they can meet their relatives (my husband is half-Kenyan).

Lovely blog by the way : )

Thank you, Dominique and thanks for visiting and subscribing to my blog. I hope you’ll get to take your kids to Kenya soon.

  2. Wow! This place looks wonderful. I love hotels that are close to the beach. With the spacious balconies, it would be nice to stay there at night to enjoy the sea breeze Do they offer airport transfer?

  3. Nice place to spend a vacation. Their prices look friendly so we’re hoping to stay there. We prefer slow travel as well, can you explain how you got there from Nairobi? Should we rent a car? We have already booked a hotel in Nairobi and will be going to Maasai Mara for 2days Safari then back to Nairobi. Also, is it better to buy souvenirs in Nairobi or in Watamu? Thanks in advance.

First of all, let me assure you that you’ll enjoy your Maasai mara trip. I was there a few weeks ago before taking this trip to Watamu. Renting a car especially since you’re travelling as a family is a good idea as long as you’ll help each other drive cause it’s a long drive. The best option for sustainable travellers is Train. I took a train from Nairobi to Mombasa ($30 first class $15 economy), then a shared van that took us all the way to the hotel. Alternatively, you can get yourself to Mombasa and organize transportation directly with the hotel.

  4. Look at that turquoise-colored beach! Staying at Kobe Suite Resort looks like something that I’d enjoy. I’m not fussy about my accommodations but I’d much prefer it to be cozy and less crowded. I also like its minimalist design.

  5. The resorts look really beautiful and have everything needed for a perfect vacation. I love that beach. I have always visited Diani when I visit Kenya but this looks like a must-try on our next vacation.

First of all, thanks for being a regular on my blog Aisasami: ) I really appreciate you. Diani was my favourite too until I came to Watamu. I think you’ll love Watamu for sure.
